From June 16 to 26, Nuclear for Climate was on the ground at the UNFCCC’s SB62 session in Bonn, represented by Sophie, our official observer. This was a key moment on the road from COP29 in Baku to COP30 in Belém, with critical negotiations on adaptation, climate finance, mitigation, just transition, and gender equity.
🕊️ The session started nearly 30 hours late due to disagreements on the inclusion of financial support from developed to developing countries as part of Paris Agreement Article 9.1. Despite the delay, SB62 helped lay the groundwork for the next COP and highlighted the growing importance of implementation.
📢 For the first time, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) hosted a side event during an SB session. This milestone reflects the growing momentum around nuclear energy and the role it can play in climate mitigation. From Baku to Belém, the conversation is expanding and more countries are joining the movement.
💬 “We are running out of time.” These words from Simon Stiell, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, during the opening plenary, captured the urgency felt throughout the venue.
🔵 Sophie O., proudly wearing her Nuclear for Climate shirt, received positive feedback from participants across the site. The perception of nuclear is shifting. There is real openness, dialogue and curiosity about the role it can play.
🤝 We joined forces with individuals from YOUNGO’s energy working group and the European Young Engineers to track mitigation activities across SB62. You can spot the group photo on the UN stairs in our post.
